Eagle Rare

"Easily one of the most tactile yet assertive and expressive bourbons I've tasted in the last two years; fasten your seatbelts."

-Paul Pacult, The Spirit Journal

History of Eagle Rare

Eagle Rare was created by Charles L. Beam in the 1970s. Charles began his distilling career at the Four Roses Distillery in 1962. At the time, the Four Roses Distillery was owned by Seagram. Charles thrived there, growing, learning, and becoming a master distiller in just six short years. During his tenure as master distiller, Four Roses Distillery released Benchmark Bourbon (1969) and Eagle Rare (1975), among other things. While Charles played a variety of roles in shaping the bourbon industry, Eagle Rare was thought to be his most significant project. It awarded him an induction into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2010. At this point, you may be wondering what makes a bottle of Eagle Rare so special. Read along to find out!

Eagle Rare Over the Years

Eagle Rare, from its beginnings, pushed the limits of bourbon. When it was first released, it was proofed at a whopping 101. It wasn't until its purchase by the Sazerac Company in 1989 that its tag changed to "90-proof liquor." Under the Sazerac Company, a few other changes were made in perfecting its recipe. The most significant change yet is in the way it is created. Eagle Rare was originally a single-barrel bourbon. And now, it is filled with contents from two barrels. Using a double-barrel blend, the distillers can create its unique flavor profile that is smooth and appealing to the taste buds.

Eagle Rare Ingredients

Eagle Rare is created with Kentucky's finest corn, rye, and barley grains. It is also made using limestone-filtered water from the Kentucky River along the Buffalo Trace Distillery, where it has been manufactured since 1992. A bottle of Eagle Rare is housed and fermented in American oak barrels for ten years. After, it is filtered in a chill filter process that allows for a clearer and smoother bourbon.

Eagle Rare Flavor Profile

Thanks to its quality ingredients and master production, Eagle Rare serves a "lofty, distinctive taste experience." It offers a complex mix of toffee, honey, leather, herby, and hints of orange peel aromas. It is bold, dry, oaky, and a tad sweet, with candied almonds and cocoa notes. It finishes dry and leaves the drinker with a desire for more.
